Curriculum

LITERACY
Children enter school with different language experiences and this must be taken into account.

The development of speaking and listening skills are encouraged by allowing the children to talk about their experiences with others in a variety of ways such as sharing their news with the class or discussing their observations with a small group of children.
Mathematics is taught throughout the school as a separate subject although there are times when skills are used in other subjects such as Science and Technology. In Key Stage One there is more of an emphasis on basic number concepts and skills. Other areas such as shape, measurement and data handling are also covered in this area. Children use practical approaches to help them gain new concepts alongside the opportunity to practice and reinforce methods.

MATHEMATICS
At Harmans Water Primary School Science is taught as a separate subject. We aim to create an interest and enthusiasm for this subject within a safe environment, enabling our pupils to acquire scientific skills and knowledge of a range of scientific concepts.

We have a dedicated science room which will have electronic microscopes as one of it's resources.
At Harmans Water Primary we encourage the children to see art as an integral and essential part of life. Through a range of topics and individual work, they should develop their visual literacy and become imaginative, analytical and critical thinkers. We aim to enrich their understanding and knowledge of art and craft, including the history of art, our artistic heritage and the artistic traditions of other cultures.

SCIENCE
I.T. is taught throughout the whole school from the nursery through to year 6. It is taught both in specific ICT lessons where children learn the skills needed to operate the hardware effectively and understand how the software we have can be applied. We also aim to embed the teaching of ICT into all other curricculum areas.
We aim to present the History National Curriculum in an interesting and stimulating way in order to arouse, develop and sustain children's interest in the past and their ability to question and communicate. Children will be given a rich experience through which they can become actively and imaginatively involved with the past. They will have access to a wide range of historical sources, representations and activities. In this way, we hope children will be helped to develop an understanding of the present in the context of the past, a sense of their own identity and an insight into the world around them.

ART & CRAFT
Geography explores the relationship between the earth and its people. Geographical study stimulates the child's interest in his surroundings and in the variety of physical and human conditions on the earth's surface.
Technology lessons are taught within the classroom. Each term the class is given a different topic. Wherever possible the children are first of all shown examples of what they could make. Often they will take things apart to see what is involved and how it works.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
By the time children start school they will have built up a repertoire of songs and nursery rhymes and will have been exposed to music of one sort or another. At school we aim to build on this knowledge by offering a wide range of experiences:- listening to various music, singing, providing instrumental accompaniments and composing their own short pieces with both traditional and modern instruments.
Facilities
Physical Education has always been regarded highly at Harmans Water and the unique and outstanding facilities and resources at the school enhance the subject itself. The school boasts use of a purpose built sports hall, heated indoor swimming pool, adventure playground, enclosed all weather pitch and hard court areas, as well as indoor changing rooms equipped with showers.
